Miami Herald columnist Leonard Pitts notes that a Wisconsin state legislator, Frank Lasee, has proposed that we arm teachers in the wake of recent school shootings. This is a perfect example of the kind of proposal that short-circuits thinking in favor of "strong" reaction (outlined in greater detail in my last post). I point it out in the hopes that recognizing others' failures to think well will shine a light on our own.
The good news is that most critics recognize the futility -- and sheer lunacy -- of Lasee's suggestion. The bad news is that the critics have turned their time and attention to Lasee and away from the thoughtfulness required.
